EXPO CHICAGO: DIVERSITY ABSOLUT

EXPO CHICAGO returns to historic Navy Pier on April 11–14, 2024 for its eleventh edition.

Perfect weather in Chicago welcomes the second spring edition of Expo Chicago, which starts with an international field of participants. Among the 175 exhibitors are eight German galleries, including Max Hetzler and Michael Werner. Director Tony Karman describes the Expo as an international fair for a regional market that stretches from the Great Lakes to the Midwest to Texas.

Corbett vs. Dempsey, a leading gallery in Chicago, is experiencing a return to normality after the pandemic. Jim Dempsey notes that, like a factory that has been reactivated, there are still minor problems. Nevertheless, the gallery has already recorded its first sales, both to locals and out-of-towners.

Berlin-based Freddy Kornfeld, a regular participant, appreciates the fair for its openness to queer and diverse topics. His works, especially by Giorgio Celin, address otherness and gender fluidity and have already found buyers from Chicago, New York and Milwaukee.

Art by people of color is a predominant theme at the fair, which can be both positive and exhausting. However, the market will still sort itself out. The audience at Expo Chicago is more diverse than at many other fairs, which the new mayor Brandon Johnson also emphasized in his opening speech as an important cultural driver for the city.
